" Improvisation in concert "
Guitar solo : Pierre Pesnon
…in the same ritual way the sun sets, I start my concerts with an improvisation on my 6 or 10-string steel guitar. To my mind there is no improvisation technique or method. The ability of the musician to interpret his intimate discourse accurately and to press outwards his inner musical story is his only fundamental leverage.
Forgetting oneself to the point where you are recognized by others is to me the indispensible passage towards the full freedom of improvised expression.
When in concert I never improvise to demonstrate or teach anything to my audience but only to reveal my emotions, my feelings and sensations of the moment.
I never ask myself whether what I’m playing fits into a grid of chords, harmony, or gamuts. No, I only play the way a child would in inventing a new game. Maybe this is where the key to the great art of improvisation lies. The “I am” becomes an “I play” from sunrise to sunset. The “I am” becomes an “I play”, from sunrise to sunset.
